I play Cain as pansexual with no preference either way. He defaults to topping, but with the right person/in the right context, he is willing (and enjoys) to bottom. He is a bit shallow and somewhat sexually aggressive, so if he finds your character attractive, he will make it known. Please let me know if this bothers you and if you would rather avoid sexual comments/attention from Cain. Due to his personality type, he is a ho and will jump into bed with literal strangers. Anything romantically intimate will take more development. As such, I prefer to see ships develop organically.

- violent - Aggression and violence define much of Cain's personality as a fighter born out of the colonies on Mars. Cain shows no hesitation getting rough with people, highlighted when he pulls a knife on Praxis, or when he's in physical disputes with other fighters. He tends to try to solve many of his disagreements this way, such as wanting to punch Phobos in the cafeteria or as he's handling Deimos' clinginess. This lends toward recklessness and poor planning in many situations.
- crude - The sexual elements of Cain are vivid from the moment he's introduced in the comic. He is not afraid to get into people's personal space, not afraid to masturbate in the cockpit while Abel is there, and almost relishes in acts of obscenity. His language is coarse with a lot of cursing involved. He calls Abel a 'slut' early on during his fight with Praxis, and in general he tends to make people uncomfortable with his foul mouth.
- duplicitous - Due to the nature of the task assigned to him, Cain reveals a fairly duplicitous and manipulative side. Granted, some of it was under duress, but Cain is not only seen manipulating Abel. He also uses Deimos for his own gain to spy on Abel, heedless of the fact that Deimos cares about him. He lies to the other fighters and plays up an 'act' to get them to back off. Up until the point he begins to develop feelings, he is extremely good at this deceitful persona, which may be one reason why he was chosen for the project.
- thoughtful + At odds with his rough and tumble nature, Cain does have a thoughtful and considerate side, though it may be subtle. One great example is when he rescues Deimos from a group of fighters, showing concern for the other fighter despite the fact they'd never met before that moment. Another is when he's beginning to become attached to Abel and goes out of his way to set up a romantic "picnic" in the storage bay. He's a decent(ish) guy beneath all of his defensive and destructive tendencies.
- affectionate + This side of Cain is revealed as he begins to open up and develop a genuine attachment to Abel. A lot of Cain can be read through his actions and body language, since the story is not told through his perspective, so much of his affection is illustrated during their intimate moments. He becomes worshipful and praises Abel, wants to sleep close together, and even appears to be a cuddler. While he may not be able to communicate how he feels well, he does show it through his treatment of Abel in the final chapters.
- dedicated + Cain puts himself 100% into what he does. After boarding the Sleipnir, he works long and hard hours to prove himself to the other fighters, and he is constantly seen in the training pods. It's obvious he takes pride in his skill, but he also puts in the effort to improve. He lets nothing stand in his way and will do anything to achieve his goal of returning home.

Disposition:
Suitability: Coming into Noctium, Cain will be under the impression that he has failed his mission. This reality will be further exacerbated by the fact that he has been taken away from his own universe, thus all possibility of returning home - his main motivation - is gone. Additionally, his canon point is from the moment Abel has rejected him and they have "broken up." The burden of his situation overall will weigh heavily on Cain, but it also presents the best opportunity for adaptation, since he has essentially lost everything that matters. One of his greatest assets as a fighter is knowing how to survive. Once through the initial phase of angst and loss, Cain will understand that he must change in order to get by in Noctium, because he has no choice. It's a life he knows well at this point.
An aspect Cain will enjoy is the new power brought on by the Gembond. As he has no special abilities himself yet highly values fighting, he'll be thrilled to test out what he can do. The bodily transformations will be much less welcome; still, he would endure it for the sake of survival. His personality is somewhat animalistic in nature already, so it might not even be a huge shock to have the physical features to go along with his behavior. Synchrony, however, will represent the biggest challenge. While he's comfortable with physical intimacy, emotional intimacy is something he hadn't experienced to its full extent until becoming closer to Abel, and he understandably held himself back from opening up to his navigator. Attempting it now will be a new shock. Not necessarily an unwelcome one, given the glimpses of an affectionate and considerate temperament we see in the comic. He has the potential to undergo real growth and forge deep connections during his stay.
Condition upon arrival: As he took a bullet to the stomach, Cain will require immediate medical attention. He may be a bit cagey and paranoid with native NPCs, wary of accepting help from them until he better understands the situation (while also asking where Abel is), but he'll settle down soon enough. He is in good shape otherwise. Hopefully the futuristic medical technology will give him a fast turnaround.

Part of the story is driven on this mystery of who Cain is, and especially who he was prior to joining the program as a fighter. Some details can be scraped from the narrative, however, despite its focus on Abel's limited perspective. We know the Alliance is a human military force in a desperate battle against Colterons, insect-like aliens hellbent on domination. Within the Alliance is a special program of elite soldiers, where units are divided into teams of fighters and navigators. The fighter-navigator pair operate the starfighter together, relying on this bond to survive. Think Pacific Rim, but with more arguments and less mind-melding (and they bang). It is this harmony between the fighter and the navigator which makes them so effective in battle. The fighter attacks by using the starfighter's weapon systems, while the navigator controls the ship, piloting and directing the fighter.
The Alliance's goal is to defend Earth, as well as Earth's colonies. The story takes place in a highly futuristic setting. Cain himself comes from a colony on Mars, glimpsed in a dream to be an extremely cold, wintry place with few comforts. From what can be gathered, Cain had some close friends while he lived here. He was enlisted into the fighter-navigator program after an incident -- it's described that he was "in over his head in the colonies," and later it's found that he was arrested and incarcerated on a trespassing charge. Thus, Cain was forced to join the recruitment program on a special task given to him by his direct commander, Bering. As of chapter five's reveal, the gritty details of Project Thebes have gained some clarity. We know he was supposed to "seduce" his assigned navigator enough for them to form a close personal relationship, wherein the navigator would want to protect Cain during battle.
Cain had two navigators before Abel was assigned to him. The first immediately rejected him, while the second was injured and given medical leave. Abel was Cain's last chance -- if he wasn't successful, he would be sent back to prison in New Volga.
The story follows their relationship from the moment they meet. In the beginning of the first chapter, Cain attacks Abel with violence, scarring his lip to demonstrate that Abel belongs to him. This doesn't put them off to a good start (shocking!). They quickly face their first mission, which is successful only when Abel pulls a risky move to save another starfighter in the battle. At the end of the fight, Abel catches Cain masturbating from the thrill of survival (lol). This sets their dynamic into motion, because soon after that encounter, they have sex. It's pretty clear Cain is seducing Abel, but in the end Abel is just as willing to be seduced. After this Abel wakes up in bed alone because Cain is reporting to Bering. Cain is infuriated because Abel is supposed to be his property, but even more so because Abel making connections with people outside of Cain jeopardizes his mission. He finds Praxis and engages him in a fight. They're interrupted before either of them can do any real damage, even though Cain pulls a knife on him. He doesn't let Abel know what happened, but they're soon distracted by each other, so Abel is easy to fool. Afterward, Abel lets Cain know he volunteered them for a suicide mission against the Colterons.
The third chapter shows Cain and Abel getting closer and becoming more familiar despite Cain refusing to share anything about himself. They both have to adjust to life on the Sleipnir, which is noticeably different from their previous location. Cain and Abel are once again thrown into a battle, and this time Abel fulfills his potential when he uses the special engine configuration to trigger the "jump drive" -- seen when the Reliant disappears after an explosion and reappears unharmed. To celebrate their victory, Cain and Abel have sex (naturally), although this time there appears to be more intimacy and trust involved.

This is all revealed to Abel from two secondary characters, not from Cain himself. Once Abel realizes he was used, they have an argument prior to a large battle, and Abel tells Cain he's done with him. They are soon discovered by Cook and Alliance officers who attempt to detain them. While escaping, Cain is shot. He seems to miss the colonies. That cagey, tough exterior isn't quite as present around these friends in the dream, cluing into the sort of persona he's had to adopt since being enlisted.

Reason: Cain suits the monster designation primarily because he is a character built on instinct and wildness. Turnskin is the most appropriate due to its focus on strength and heightened senses (attributes which suit his role as a fighter), as well as the shapeshifting/transformation aspect lending to his somewhat mercurial nature as both Cain and Alexei. I specifically chose a wild dog for him as he is called a 'dog' canonically because of the violent and pack-like mentality of fighters.

He goes into every situation with his walls up, because he knows the other fighters are only going to try and tear him down -- they don't see him on their level, partly because of his colony background and partly because of Bering's favored treatment. And he becomes closer to Abel with the awareness he's deceiving him.
The best way to read Cain is through his body language, particularly when it involves Abel. As the narrative follows Abel's point of view, and given the fact Cain smothers vulnerability in himself, his actions are more telling than his words. In the third chapter, Cain and Abel have sex in a very different way than usual -- it's almost loving, or at least incredibly worshipful, with Cain praising him for his skill on the battlefield and claiming that he's never wanted anyone like he wants Abel. The line blurs between truth and deceit with Cain, but if he's lying, he's a good actor. When Cain wakes up the next morning, he dresses to go see Bering, but stops to look at Abel sleeping before he leaves. He crushes the cigar Bering gives him as a reward, and argues to give Abel some of the credit in their joint victory. His expressions in these moments don't look relieved or joyful at his successful manipulation of Abel, but instead reluctant and uncertain. It's possible Cain has begun to care about Abel just as much as Abel cares about him.
Cain's behavior with others is also worthy of note, though these interactions don't have the same depth as they do between Cain and Abel. Deimos, another fighter, is like an obedient subordinate to Cain, following his every order and tailing Abel when Cain isn't with him. Although Cain seems to keep Deimos at a distance for strict business reasons, when Deimos is being treated poorly by his own navigator Cain is agitated and wants to start a fight in his defense. At the very least Cain is protective of him. He speaks his native tongue with Deimos, something he's not seen doing with anyone else. They may not be friends, but their understanding of each other is innate. Cain did have friends back home -- as seen in his dream, where he's genuinely excited and happy during the reunion, and he admits his goal is to return to the home in New Volga. He seems to miss the colonies. That cagey, tough exterior isn't quite as present around these friends in the dream, cluing into the sort of persona he's had to adopt since being enlisted.
When Cain is relaxed, he has a more comfortable and teasing attitude. This is most common with Abel in their downtime, when they're having sex or just after. It occurs more frequently as the narrative unfolds, noticeable when Cain chooses to sit with Abel in the lunchroom. They bicker between each other, but Cain looks relatively happy when he lets Abel eat off of his plate. It's something Deimos picks up on. Despite this less abrasive behavior, Cain doesn't hold back on his crudeness or bad language. There are some parts of him which remain consistent throughout the narrative regardless of the deeper understanding of his character. The file obtained on Cain by Phobos describes him as "promiscuous" with a background in criminal activity, and Commander Cook declares his distaste for Cain's crude nature later in chapter five. In light of the failed mission and his desire to be with Abel despite everything, his motivations have become clearer, and so have his actions.
Abilities & Skills: Cain has no special or supernatural abilities. He is an extremely skilled fighter, which is remarked upon several times. In fact, he's considered the best fighter in the entire program. This means he's talented in hand-to-hand combat as well as using the weapons system on the starfighter ships. He fights like he's trying to survive and isn't afraid of playing dirty. His street smarts are an important asset in this respect, most likely attained during his time in the colonies. He also speaks Russian.
Inventory/Companions: He will have little to no belongings on his person when he arrives, just a bloody flightsuit with a bullet hole in it. Also a gun.
Choice: Monster (Turnskin, black-backed jackal)
Reason: Cain suits the monster designation primarily because he is a character built on instinct and wildness. Turnskin is the most appropriate due to its focus on strength and heightened senses (attributes which suit his role as a fighter), as well as the shapeshifting/transformation aspect lending to his somewhat mercurial nature as both Cain and Alexei. I specifically chose a wild dog for him as he is called a 'dog' canonically because of the violent and pack-like mentality of fighters.

meadowlark CRAU history.
Cain arrives in Meadowlark, or the city called New Amsterdam, in August (IC December). He's dropped off, drugged and disoriented at a rave. There, he meets a number of people, has some regretful sex with a stranger, and then is knocked out/hauled to the safehouse for newcomers by Jason Todd. Cain spends a few weeks in the safehouse adjusting to the new world he's now in. He's quick to try and get out, however, and talks Giovanni Rammsteiner into renting an apartment with him.
In September (IC January-March), Cain attends the Lantern Festival. There he meets Hei, and they end up running from the cops. Cain has a moment of panic due to the memory of being arrested by the military in his past, and Hei talks him down (in his own way...). After the festival, the UNA (an elite team of brainwashed soldiers) attack Morningstar (the rebel group) and, by extension, become entangled with the PCs who were brought into New Amsterdam. The fight leads to utter chaos. Cain goes on a mission with Markus, Fitz, and Peggy, where he uses his new powers to kill one of the UNA soldiers with Fitz's help. The group barely make it out alive, but it's a bonding experience, something Cain isn't used to as he's much more accustomed to only looking out for himself. Cain also participates in several other, smaller rescue missions of citizens during this event's attack.
During the later anime convention, Cain picks up Deimos, who has just freshly arrived in the city, and escorts him to the safehouse. He also meets Alex and has some fun jumping trains with Deimos, Heine, and Prompto. He later attends a rooftop party hosted by Loki's household, where he has a fight with Jason for being too overprotective. He also lets Deimos come and live with him, introducing Deimos to Giovanni.
In October (IC March-April), Cain goes to Oktoberfest and meets a bunch of the newest recruits who have been brought into New Amsterdam. It isn't long after this that the city is struck by a strange phenomenon: characters are pulled into each other's bizarre dreamscapes. Cain participates in several dreams. He helps Alex escape her endless nightmare and brings her to his own dreamscape, where they bond over siblings and practice shooting rifles; he pilots Voltron as the Red Lion; he follows Fitz across alien landscapes until they're forced to escape imprisonment by Russian soldiers; he encounters Peggy in a warzone and brings her onto the Sleipnir, where they kill some Colterons together; he fights again with Jason in his own dreamscape, though it's with a resolution; and he also accompanies Prompto on a mission to get close to the NPC, Hideki Maeda, who is the son of an important corporate figure.
There is one area characters have access to during this event, named the Facility, which holds a number of mysterious features. One of these is a spear embedded in the ground. Cain, Fitz, and Markus take it upon themselves to try and move it. This leads to dire consequences. As soon as all three use their powers on the spear, Fitz and Markus are instantly murdered, and Cain simply vanishes. Riku, Sora, and Peggy are forced to work together to try and bring them back from where their minds and bodies have gone. Both Fitz and Markus have a traumatic experience; Cain, on the other hand, is wholly peaceful where he has been taken. It's with great reluctance - and plenty of guilt for the fate of his friends - that Peggy convinces him to return. After this event, Cain discovers that he has a new ability allowing him to manipulate plantlife/nature.
Everyone wakes up from the dreamscapes on a train to New Tokyo. Time has rewound a few days, to their confusion. They discover they're on a mission to aid New Tokyo in recovery from a severe weather disaster. While there, Cain goes on missions to help the citizens of New Tokyo and talks with several of the PCs who he encountered in the dreams. This is also when Abel appears. The two endure an emotional reunion, and it takes some time for them to get on the same page. When they do, they become fairly inseparable, and eventually return to New Amsterdam to live together. They are officially dating at this point.
In late October (IC May), Jason is stabbed while with Cain at the underground fighting ring, and Cain is forced to haul him to safety. It's a harrowing experience because of how close he is to Jason now. At a later point, he visits Fitz and the two discuss what happened in the dreamscapes, as well as Cain's discovery of his strange new power. He shares his real name, since Fitz has become something like a brother to him. He also celebrates his birthday jointly with Prompto at the end of the month. Their party is thrown by Hideki Maeda, who after the dreamscapes has somewhat attached himself to the pair and declared them good friends. It's an expensive party at an elite, downtown club, and Cain has fun socializing/getting drunk even as he endures the burden of pretending to be Hideki's buddy. He receives several birthday gifts from close friends as well. Not too long after this, Cain vanishes from New Amsterdam, leaving Abel behind.
