Same idea. Sci-tech specialist. I build weapons and defence tech for SHIELD, an extra-governmental military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency back on my earth.
[ that's public information. SHIELD is more FBI than CIA. he'd even wear the logo, if he still had the gear. ]
How's construction treating you, flyboy?
[ sounds like it wouldn't scratch the same itch. ]
[Better, maybe, than one of Alliance's typical engineers. He wonders what Fitz would think of the Colteron tech.]
easy and boring just wanted to get something quick so i could move out of the safehouse living with this guy giovanni has a brother whos here, acts fuckin weird about it
[ what a compliment — for the boy who always dreamed of outer space. ]
Bit of an odd duck on the whole, isn't he.
[ not a bad thing. just an observation. ]
I know him, but I've only seen the brother on the network.
[ interesting that he's paired off with cain. expedient of them both, definitely. ]
Sharp of you to get out of there fast. Is it a halfway decent living situation?
[ Team SHIELD's flat is nicer than most, with three STEM incomes and Fitz's steady stream of sketchy money. he also means the whole "having a random flatmate" thing. ]
[ could be worse, yeah. could be better. few are lucky enough to have two dear friends from home (and a career easily transferable to this corporate hellscape). ]
Yeah, I am. Is that something you'd be interested in?
[ back in his day, you couldn't be a pilot without an engineering degree. ]
could run a couple basic diagnostics, switch out parts, refuel, patch up easy shit most familiar with the weapons system
[As it's become relevant, Cain hesitates... but his next response isn't a long wait.]
i had a partner he was my navigator did most of the engineering legwork and strat planning navigators get special training for that shit, so its not really something ive got a whole lot of practice at
[Never mind Abel was the first to actually want his help on the engine. Strange to be asked for input, to be taught little tricks and concepts, to learn about an area typically barred from fighters.]
[ he says partner, and fitz immediately thinks of his own, without knowing if the other relationship is intimate in the same way.
complimentary skillsets, a shared language. i'm engineering, and she's biochem. hard not to feel adrift and unqualified without her. ]
Sounds like you had a clever partner. But you realise the experience you've listed is the foundation of everything else, yeah? That means you've got the aptitude for it and half the skills already.
Maths, physics, engineering. They form the mechanics of your ship and its trajectory. Hell, they're the foundation of this world, of any world, and how you can change it, make it work better for you. You know the science and maths, and you can navigate your way anywhere, fix anything on the fly, build tools, dismantle obstacles, crack codes, hijack enemy technology.
[ is it obvious he's a guest lecturer at nerd school yet... ]
But what do I know? I've only been using it to defend the world for fifteen years.
@leo.fitz / a day or two after the event.

Will you be fighting anytime soon?

[That sounds dirtier than it is.]

no subject
Worried about me?
[ 😇 ]
Broken ribs right themselves, so it's just a matter of time.
And my job's more about the brain than the body, so I'll survive.

halfway decent
sure
could be a lot worse
[Coming from someone whose previous living conditions were about the square footage of a walk-in closet.]
you gonna be working on pulsars spaceflight tech?
no subject
Yeah, I am.
Is that something you'd be interested in?
[ back in his day, you couldn't be a pilot without an engineering degree. ]
no subject
not really qualified
[Sure, he's helped Abel with the ship. Doesn't make him an engineer by trade.]
no subject
I doubt that.

even i know its not that easy
they dont just hand people like me jobs like that

Could just be something you’re learning to do.
Something you know how to do one day, should you ever need it.
[ okay DAD ]
If you have the skills, it doesn’t matter who you are, cause you can prove anyone who doubts you wrong.

[There you go.]
thanks for the speech and everything
but how would it even be useful
like long term
