Cain walks up, hands shoved into pockets.]

[his expression falls a little at that... frowning as his energy level dips just a bit.]
Can't be helped. If we keep thinking of the what ifs, we'll drive ourselves crazy with guilt.

...much as it sucks to say this, she's still young and I heard from Gaby that she's getting adopted into a family that lost their child.
[pausing at the door, he scratches the back of his head, looking away -- before pushing the door open and waiting for cain to come in too.]
[Is it in his own nature to slip into that negativity? Maybe it's not, he's seen plenty of war, but this is the first time it's presented itself on Earth to him. Civilians, rather than soldiers trained to know their lives are expendable. And he can't just forget everything he saw.
Still, Prompto's explanation is tempting. The girl is young, and she'll find another family to love and take care of her. What can they do to help? If her parents couldn't be saved, then...
Cain sighs, rubbing his face with a gloved hand, and then ducks in through the open space of the door.]
Think she'll like it? [He glances to Prompto's hand.] The doll. Reminds me of one my sister used to have, when we were kids. 'Cept it was made out of just wool.
[prompto pulls it out of the bag, since cain is asking about it. it's big enough that he can fit his hand to hold it -- and thus he holds he out to the other. it's soft and fuzzy, despite some of the more messier stitch work on the tail. he tried his best.]
Dunno. Kids are weird. I never had any toys growing up.
[he smiles, though, eyes meeting cain's]
Still, sounds like it'd make some kind of memory. Hopefully a good one. [about his sister?]
[It's a good effort. Cain reaches out to take it after a brief moment of hesitation, and he can feel the fuzz on his wrists if not his fingers, considering the usual gloves - he's used to wearing them to shield from the empathy connection.]
I guess. She gave it to me later.
[Not that he'd wanted it, at the time, spitting teenage rebellion and nursing secret anger when she left.]
None? What about like, a stick outside? [He remembers making up shit like that with the other kids in the neighborhood - playing in the dusty streets.] Turn it into a sword.
[Okay, he's handing the doll back now, then looking around the room.]
[prompto grins at that, taking the doll back and putting it gently into the bag.]
I had a camera that I won at a raffle. My parents weren't around much and I didn't get to have any hand-me-downs from older siblings.
[but despite the sad picture that may paint about his childhood, prompto's smiling and looking around too. it's not long before a girl startles out of her cot, and prompto's waving at her enthusiastically, getting down on one knee as she starts hurrying over.]
Hey, Anouk!
[her small body slamming into them into a tight hug, trying to hug them both at the same time; an arm all around prompto's neck, the other one pulling around cain's arm.]
[If there's sympathy, it's withheld for Prompto's sake. His own background's exposed him to poverty and children left wanting, absent parents and even siblings, so it's not too much of a surprise. Just provides some context.
And then Anouk's body slamming into then, drawing a brief yelp out of Cain as he's dragged down into the hug. Strong for a little girl.]
We, uh, wanted to see you off. [He looks to Prompto for help as Anouk's face lights up.] Got you a gift.
